What is Community Payback

Community Payback is a national scheme offered by the National Probation Service, delivered at a local level. It gives the people of Staffordshire a chance to play a part in how offenders pay back and you can have a say on what work takes place in your local area and how this will benefit your community.

Nationally, over 5 million hours of compulsory work is done by offenders each year. In Staffordshire alone, nearly 140,000 hours were carried out during 2006/07. This work included clearing church yards, litter removal, repairing park benches, repairing and redecorating community centres and removing graffiti. Offenders are working to make your community a better place to live.

If you would like to nominate a project or scheme, please complete the nomination form.

To be suitable, the project, scheme or site must meet the following criteria :-

  • it must reduce the fear of crime by making the community a safer place
  • it must benefit the local community
  • it must not take away paid work from others
  • no-one must profit from the work
  • it must be worthwhile, constructive and give offenders new skills
  • offenders must be putting something back into the community

All projects combine hard work and the chance for the offender to develop important life skills. They help to reduce the risk of re-offending and so make our communities safer.
