The Justice Seen Justice Done Government initiative identified 60 "Pioneer Areas" with Stoke on Trent being one of those areas. A Neighbourhood Crime and Justice Co-ordinator was tasked to work with the Staffordshire Probation Area and local Courts to promote the visibility and public awareness of Community Payback.
The Neighbourhood Crime and Justice Co-ordinator consulted with the public and other partner agencies to identify high visibility Community Payback projects which reflected local needs.
Five sites were identified :
- Ellgood Lane, Goldenhill
- Park Lane Garage Site, Fenton
- Northwood and Birches Head
- Berryhill Greenway site
- Uttoxeter Road, Normacot
The public were asked to vote on these 5 sites and the winning site, which has therefore been given priority, was Ellgood Lane, Goldenhill.
A team of supervised offenders commenced work on this project mid-June 2009 and to date in excess of 600 hours have been worked clearing this overgrown and litter strewn site.
In July 2009, Phil Wheatley the Director General of NOMS (National Offender Management Service) visited the site and met with members of the local community and also representatives from the local council, the police and the Youth Justice Board. He was very impressed with the work that had been done and the commitment from the probation service, the offenders and the local community.
