"... more than just a statement of how we will meet our statutory requirements and legal duties ..."

(Staffordshire Probation Area Equality Scheme, March 2009)

Equality and Diversity

Promoting equality and respecting people's differences must be at the core of an open, impartial and trusted Probation Service.  With this in mind, Staffordshire Probation Area has a crucial role to play in building the confidence of the diverse communities it serves.  Promoting equality is more than just a statement of how we will meet out statutory requirements and legal duties, it must be an ever developing, integral part of the way we conduct our business.

Our newly created Equality Scheme 2009-11 therefore encourages us to think beyond constraints and barriers, to challenge ourselves to find new ways of working that enable Staffordshire Probation to deliver real and lasting change for the offenders we supervise, in the environments in which we work, and for the communities that we serve.

Over the next three years, amidst our developments into a Probation Trust, we will continue to develop working practices and deliver services which promote equality of opportunity where no person receives "...less favourable treatment on the grounds of gender, marital status, dependants, colour, race, nationality, ethnic or national origin, disability, AIDS or HIV antibody status, age, religion, trade union or political beliefs or activity, sexual orientation, or spent offences."  (Staffordshire Probation Area Equal Opportunities Policy, June 1998).

Providing Us With Feedback

Management of the Equality and Diversity agenda is a living entity.  Over the next three years, we will be developing and amending our policies, strategies and functions in relation to the general and specific equality duties, and would welcome feedback on our activities, in particular our Equality Scheme.
