Community Scheme Launched in Cannock

6th Mar, 2009

Officers from Cannock Neighbourhood Policing Unit (NPU) have set up a scheme to help low-risk offenders put something back into their community.

Under the banner of the night-time economy project, the police and the probation working are working together to use offenders on community service in the town.

For the last month a team of six offenders have started their "Community Payback" by litter picking in and around Cannock.

And during the next four weeks, the group will also be jet washing block paving - supervised by either Cannock Chase Council Streetwardens or police officers.

Along with this they will be tidying flower beds in the town centre to prepare them for a scheme with local schools which will see pupils grow plants and shrubs.

This campaign is being spearheaded by Sgt Jason Dorrington, a dedicated officer working in partnership with a host of agencies to support the local economy.

Sgt Dorrington commented, "This scheme will include a number of people from a diverse section of our community.  Local businesses are offering their support to the initiative which sees low-risk offenders put something back into their community through the payback scheme.  I would like to thank J Murphy & Sons, based in Hawks Green who have been instrumental in providing advice, support and funding as well as South Staffs Water."
