Staffordshire Probation Area wins Top Safety Award

For the second year running, Staffordshire Probation Area has scooped a prestigious international award from one of the world's leading health and safety training, advisory and audit bodies.

For an organisation to win this coveted award, it must demonstrate that it has comprehensive health and safety policies in place.  Also targeted plans and a clear commitment to health and safety from frontline services to the boardroom.  It must be committed to the promotion of a positive safety culture. The winning organisation must also have demonstrated the competence of those responsible for the management of health and safety and provide clear evidence about the improvements they have achieved in health and safety during the year.

Mr Brian Nimick, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council (BSC) said, "For more than 50 years, the BSC has led the way in promoting health, safety and environmental best practice in society.  In the 21st Century, many organisations worldwide are understandably making health, safety and environmental their top priority.  Through achieving an International Safety Award, Staffordshire Probation Area is helping to make our vision of a healthy and safe working environment a reality."

Ian Hewitt, Business Support Manager at Staffordshire Probation Area said, "I am very pleased that we have gained this award for the second year running.  Probation staff work in what can be a very difficult environment.  In gaining this award, we have ensured that staff are safe and able to continue with their high standard of work with offenders, victims and protecting the local community."

Last year, Prime Minister Gordon Brown added his congratulations : "I am very delighted to send my congratulations to all of those organisations being presented with an award by the British Safety Council.  These awards recognise the crucial success that these organisations and their employees have achieved in their pursuit of excellence in the management of health, safety and environmental matters at an international level.  The event provides an opportunity to publicly recognise the important contribution made by the British Safety Council in promoting health, safety and environmental best practice.  I would like to place on record my appreciation of the support given by the Council in raising public awareness of the benefits effective health, safety and environmental management brings to business, employees, the environment and the economy as a whole."
